The Six Pillars of Integrity

19 February 2025

Integrity is the foundation upon which trust, honor, and purpose are built. Without it, the pillars of leadership, relationships, and personal growth crumble. In a  conversation with Bill Pipke, we explore six fundamental questions that serve as a guide to living with integrity.

These questions provide a framework for ethical decision-making, ensuring that our actions align with our values.

Am I Using My Influence for the Good of Everyone or Just Myself?

Our influence is a powerful tool. When making decisions, it's essential to ask whether our actions benefit the collective good or serve only our interests. Integrity demands selflessness and the willingness to uplift others rather than simply advancing our own agendas.

Will People Trust Me If I Do This?

Trust is the foundation of meaningful relationships, whether in business, leadership, or personal life. If an action compromises trust, it also compromises integrity. By asking this question, we ensure that our choices build credibility and foster genuine connections.

Do my actions reflect the dignity and self-worth I deserve?

Integrity is not just about how we treat others but also how we treat ourselves. Dignity is our inherent value and self worth as human beings—something we're all born with—while respect is earned through our actions. Honoring our own dignity shapes the choices we make and lays the foundation for integrity. Our actions influence others, and true dignity strengthens integrity by uplifting, not manipulating. By asking, "Is this fulfilling my purpose? Is this why I'm here?" we ensure our choices align with our values, allowing integrity to flourish.

Does This Honor Others?

Respect and dignity are central to integrity. To act with integrity means to honor those around us—our colleagues, clients, friends, and even strangers. A decision that dishonors others ultimately weakens the ethical foundation upon which integrity stands.

Is This Truthful?

Truth is non-negotiable when it comes to integrity. Honesty in our words, actions, and intentions ensures that we remain trustworthy and reliable. Even when a lie seems convenient, it erodes the very essence of integrity.

Am I Being Authentic?

Authenticity requires transparency and genuineness. It means aligning our internal values with our external actions. If we cannot be truthful with ourselves and others, we stray from integrity.

A Real-World Example: Integrity in Action

Bill shared a simple yet powerful example of integrity in everyday life. While at a restaurant, he noticed that the bill did not include the charge for his dessert. Rather than keeping quiet and taking advantage of the mistake, he asked himself the six questions. Would failing to correct the error influence him negatively? Would it compromise trust? Would it dishonor the establishment? Was it truthful? The answers were clear. Integrity required that he inform the restaurant and pay for what he had received.

Applying Integrity to the Digital World

Integrity is not just about face-to-face interactions; it extends to the online world as well. Before posting, commenting, or engaging with others digitally, these six questions can serve as a guide. Are we using our influence positively? Are we being truthful and authentic? Are we honoring others and building trust?

The Importance of True Integrity

Integrity is not a pick-and-choose virtue. If one of these six questions cannot be answered with a "Yes", then integrity is compromised. It is like a building with six pillars—if one is weak or missing, the structure is unstable. True integrity requires keeping all areas strong.

Integrity is more than a principle—it is a lifestyle. By consistently asking ourselves these six questions, we create a foundation of trust, authenticity, and purpose in every aspect of life. Whether in leadership, business, relationships, or online interactions, integrity sustains. Without it, everything crumbles. But when embraced fully, it becomes a force that transforms individuals, organizations, and societies for the better.
